I have written a number of posts on Memorial Day, my background growing up was in a military community in South Korea, Turkey, and Germany. I currently live in San Diego which has a tremendous Naval and Marine presence, so the military has afforded me a lot in life. I see these wonderful people serving our country almost daily and the fact they are there putting their lives ont he line for our freedom really means a lot to the country as a whole.

If you were in the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, or Coast Guard, you have put your lives on the line for this great nation. Some of your friends and family may have paid the ultimate sacrifice for the red, white, and blue flag that flies overhead. This day is set aside to honor them all and I for one will not forget the struggle and the sacrifice of these wonderful people. Having family that has served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan I know first hand what it means to know that your loved ones are in the eye of danger many miles away. I know from personal experience that every time that phone rings, in the back of your mind you wonder if it is that phone call you have had nightmares about.

As you enjoy this long weekend, remember that your freedoms today are from sacrifices of people that you may never know. You may miss a day of work, but these men and women are still out there making sure that you are safe and our freedoms are protected.

Take time out today to thank a vet, listen to their stories, and always remember, without them, we would not be here.

Enjoy your memorial day, but remember what the day is about and celebrate it!
