10 Ways to Spend Time with Your Grandchildren

When you retire, you have more time to do what you want with who you want. For many retirees, the people they want to spend time with the most are their grandchildren. If you’re looking for a few fun activities to do with your grandkids, here are some ideas that might spark inspiration.

Go to the Local Zoo

One of the more popular activities you can do with your grandkids is going to the zoo. Since it’ll most likely be an all-day event, you will have plenty of time to enjoy their company as you make some great memories. It also helps that zoos usually have a senior discount, so you won’t have to worry about breaking the bank too much.

Spend the Day at the Park

If you want to spend time with your grandkids outside, try taking them to your local park. The park is a great place to go where you can relax while the kids are playing around. It might even be a good idea to bring some food with you so that you can have a picnic together.

Bake with Them

Although this one may need some pre-planning and has the possibility to get very messy very quickly, baking with your grandkids is always a fun activity. It’s a good way to teach the kids some lessons and even some family traditions. From cookies to cake, you can be sure that the kids are going to be entertained the entire way through.

Arts and Crafts

A go-to activity that may work is doing some arts and crafts with the kids. This is a fun and easy activity because all ages can participate. Depending on the season, you can set up crafts that are geared toward specific holidays such as Halloween. You can also get coloring books and crayons for them to use. The best part of this activity is that the kids may give you the finished product, which will make for some great keepsakes.

Play Dress Up

An activity that doesn’t come to mind initially is playing dress up. By getting some old clothes out of storage, you can put together a tea party or a play. This is also a great way to encourage creativity in kids, which is a skill they will carry with them into adulthood. Whether it’s tea at high noon or the re-enactment of their favorite movie, what matters most is the time you spent helping set up and watching the performance.

Read Stories Out Loud

While it may seem simple, reading a book to the kids can be a great activity. It’s another activity that can be enjoyed by all ages. By reading them one of their favorite stories, you can form a strong bond that will stay with them as a nostalgic memory.

See a Movie

If you’re experiencing a rainy day but still want to do something fun with your grandkids, try taking them to a movie. It may cost a little but seeing their excitement will be worth it.

Play Outside

As simple as it sounds just going outside and playing in the backyard is a great activity to do with your grandkids. From blowing bubbles and sidewalk chalk to tag and Simon Says, there are so many activities you can do with them. If you need to take a break at all, just declare yourself the judge so that you are still participating in whatever game you are playing. Finally, don’t be afraid to switch things up by creating your own game; your grandkids will love the fact that you are actively partaking in the play day.

Teach Them a Hobby

Whatever type of hobby you’re into – from fishing to knitting and more – it may be fun to show them the ropes.  By piquing their interest, you may be able to teach them a skill that will help them throughout life. Overall, it is a great way to pass the time while forming a bond that will be special for you.

Try Gardening

Even though it might get messy, gardening with the grandkids is an activity they will enjoy. It will give them the chance to get dirty while helping you get the job done. This can also be a good time to teach them some life lessons.

Retirement allows you more free time to spend with your loved ones, especially your grandkids. By devoting more time to them, you can make memories that will last a lifetime.
