Headaches can be bothersome and annoying. Migraines, on the other hand, can be unbearable. They not only make it hard to function but make it nearly impossible to complete everyday tasks. If you are someone prone to migraines, try these natural remedies to help alleviate your pain and discomfort.

Exercise – it helps you maintain a healthy figure, but more importantly it has the ability to reduce stress and tension, key sources of migraines. Participating in aerobic activity, such as running, swimming, dancing, or kickboxing, three times a week can greatly diminish the severity of a migraine. This increase in heart rate through these activities also triggers a release of endorphins in your brain, making you feel more relaxed. However, exercise done the wrong way or even overdone can actually cause headaches. This makes it imperative to conduct a proper warm up and cool down in order for your workout to work in your favor.

  1. Relax Your Mind and Body

Relaxation techniques work wonders when it comes to relieving a migraine. Yoga or meditation help by focusing all of your attention on your body. Loosening up your muscles and taking long, deep breaths from your diaphragm increases the amount of oxygen flowing through your body. This state of hyper-awareness combined with stretching and breathing helps relieve any tension you may be feeling. Ultimately, it can make a pounding headache nonexistent.

Butterbur and feverfew are both plants of the daisy family. They are often used medically as herbal remedies for headaches. They have the potential to reduce the frequency of migraines by reducing the amount of inflammation in your body. Inflammation is the root cause of headaches because of the pressure it puts on blood vessels in your head.

Dehydration is a common culprit of a throbbing headache. According to WebMD, you should drink half your weight in ounces of water every day to stay hydrated, and go to the bathroom every two to three hours. One physical indication of whether or not you are hydrated would be the clarity of your urine. Make sure you are staying hydrated throughout the day. Since our bodies are predominantly made up of water, it’s important to replenish them to ensure we are functioning at our best.

A do-it-yourself temple massage can be an effective way to lessen migraine pain. When done with peppermint oil, it’s even more effective. Peppermint can have a cool, soothing effect and ease any discomfort.

  1. Don’t Underestimate the Power of Vitamin B2

Vitamins, in general, give your body the nutrients it needs to perform vital functions. In particular, vitamin B2, also known as riboflavin, helps protect cells from oxidative damage and supplies your body with energy. When consumed at high levels, it’s been shown to reduce migraine incidence.

  1. Avoid MSG at All Costs

MSG stands for monosodium glutamate and its purpose in food is to enhance flavor. Although MSG may taste good, it can prompt a migraine, so it’s encouraged to minimize its intake. It could also be interesting to keep a food diary to see if other foods are causing your migraines. Everyone’s bodies react differently, so it may help you learn what works best for you.
