• Discounts for the Senior Traveler

  • by Lauren Russell

There are many benefits to traveling as an older adult. For one, you have the time during your retirement years to travel due to a more flexible schedule. There’s a greater appreciation that comes with the experience you’re having. You have more street smarts from your years of living and you can afford a little more for a hotel rather than a night in a youth hostel. What’s even better than these benefits? If you’re an older American, you can also take advantage of a variety of travel discounts for seniors. Here are a few of our favorite.

Getting There

Whether traveling by plane, train, or automobile, there’s a discount for you. If you’re 62 or older and traveling by train, you can receive a 15% discount on the lowest fare train ticket through Amtrak. Greyhound passengers who are 62 and older can ride at a 5% discount. If you wish to get behind the wheel, drivers who are 50+ will receive a discount when they rent a vehicle from Hertz.

When it comes to flying, a number of airlines offer discounts. These include American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, United Airways, and many more, though discounts may vary based on destination and dates of travel.

Staying There

Enjoy 15% off your room at Marriott hotels through their senior discount program. Holiday Inn also offers a senior discount to guests who are 62 or older. Seniors can even save up to 50% at participating Hyatt hotels. Other hotels that offer a senior discount are Best Western, Hampton Inn, and more.

Playing There

US citizens and permanent residents who are 62 and older can receive a lifetime pass to many national parks for $10. Along with admittance into many of the country’s national parks, the pass also offers discounts to such amenities as a camping site.

Booking Your Travel

It is important to remember that you may have to ask for the discount – especially if you are booking over the phone or online. Many places will offer the discount, but only if you ask for it. Keep in mind, too, that you may have to show additional documentation to prove your age. Usually, a driver’s license or other picture ID with your birthdate on it will work.
