Happy Halloween to all the ghosts and goblins out there! This is one of my favorite times of the year because of the cool crisp weather and of course, all the candy!
To help you celebrate Halloween I have the story of how the Jack-O’-lantern came to be.
According to folklore the origins of the Jack-O’-lantern comes from an Irish myth about a man nicknamed “Stingy Jack”. Stingy Jack would hang out with the Devil and have drinks with him. But Stingy Jack was true to his name and did not want to pay for his drink. He convinced the Devil to turn himself into a coin so that Jack could buy their drinks. Being true to his name Jack put the coin in his pocket to keep next to a cross so the Devil could not change back again. Jack freed the Devil after a while but made the Devil promise to never bother him for the next year. A year later Jack tricked the Devil again by having the Devil climb a tree for a piece of fruit. Once the Devil climbed the tree Jack put a cross on the tree so the Devil could not climb down. Jack demanded that the Devil could not take his soul. Soon, Jack died but he could not go to Heaven….the Devil did not want to go back on his word for not taking his soul….so the Devil let Jack roam the Earth with a burning piece of coal. Jack roamed the Earth with his coal in a carved out turnip ever since. The Irish referred to Jack as Jack of the Lantern and it soon became known as Jack O’ Lantern.
