• Travel Series – Las Vegas

  • by Kristen Curzytek

Get ready! Our next stop on our travel series is Las Vegas, Sin City, a playground for adults! Now I know Las Vegas is known for its gambling, and before all you non-gambling folks quit reading, Vegas is so much more than gambling. In fact you can keep yourself very busy all day without ever putting a dollar in a slot machine!

The first thing you need to know about Las Vegas is there is really two parts to Vegas: Old Downtown or Freemont Street and the Las Vegas Strip. Let’s look at Freemont Street first.

Old Downtown or Freemont Street

Freemont Street is where it all began in the 1930s.The original Las Vegas is Old Downtown or Freemont Street. Here you will find The Golden Nugget, 4 Queens, Fitzgeralds and many other older casinos. These casinos are typically smaller than the newer casinos on the Strip. But I found during my visit that the Old Downtown slots seem to pay out more than the slots I played on the Strip. But that might just be me.

Food on Freemont Street

Freemont Street is known for expensive food like prime rib for cheap. Freemont Street is home to the $8.95 steak dinner. There are endless amounts of food choices. You can have a world class meal on for less than 20 bucks and I’m talking prime rib, shrimp and steak!

One of the food attractions on Freemont Street is the Heart Attack Grill. Known for their Quadruple Bypass Burger, Heart Attack Grill has a burger for everyone no matter the size of your appetite.

Freemont experience

The Freemont Experience is a light show that happens hourly after sun set. It is a show set to music that is displayed on a canopy that runs along Freemont Street. This canopy of lights includes more than 12 million LED lamps that help to display images in the Freemont experience. The light show features different versions throughout the night set to different genres of music.

Las Vegas Strip

Las Vegas Boulevard is where you can find all the newer casinos, the larger casinos that are almost like cities themselves. Las Vegas Boulevard has the Luxor, Bellagio, Caesars Palace, New York-New York and many, many more. On the Strip you find tons of hotels offering much more than just gambling. Almost all of the hotels on the Strip offer shows, concerts, live entertainment plenty of dining experiences and tons of things to see.

Food on the Las Vegas Strip

Freemont Street is where you get the deals; the Las Vegas Strip is where you get the meals fit for a king! While prices can be a little more than what you find on Freemont Street, there are some amazing five star meals. Las Vegas is known for having world known chefs cooking every day in the restaurants you can find right in your own casino. In Rio you can find one of the best buffets in the world. Crab legs, shrimp, and desserts that go on forever. It is a food paradise.

Entertainment on the Las Vegas Strip

Be sure to bring your walking shoes with you because you will do a lot of walking. Las Vegas Boulevard is about 4 miles long of casinos, attractions, bars and restaurants.  That’s just the length of the road all the casinos are on. That’s not even including how many miles long inside each casino can be. While taking in the sites of the strip you will see an array of street performers. You see street performers who act, sing, and dance, have animal performers, tell jokes and even perform magic tricks. During my visit to Las Vegas I saw people dressed up as movie characters, and these were pretty impressive costumes.

Helicopter Rides

Vegas is pretty adventurous place to visit. One thing thrill seekers can do while in Vegas is take a helicopter tour of the strip. You can plan your ride at just about any time of the day. Early morning rides give you wonderful sunrises. While trips at night give you a bird’s eye view of the strip all lit up. It is a pretty cool experience no matter what time of day you go.

You can spend a solid week in Las Vegas and not see everything there is to see. It is certainly a destination spot that everyone should see once in their life time. Like I said, even if you are not into gambling you can find some pretty fun things to see and do in Las Vegas.
