• Easy Exercise – Swimming or Water Aerobics

A great exercise that is easy to do all year round is swimming or water aerobics. It is an exercise that works the whole body and provides many benefits for participants. It is an exercise that is offered at many YMCAs and many high schools offer classes to seniors. Swimming has so many benefits for the body:

  • Improve cardiovascular conditions
  • Improve flexibility
  • Muscle toning
  • Stress reduction
  • Weight control
  • Improved balance

Another benefit of swimming is the low impact the movements have on your joints. Running and walking are wonderful exercises with lots of benefits; however it is not an easy exercise for everyone. Not everyone can take the stress on knees and other joints. With Swimming the impact is low for joints, making it an activity anyone can do.

Warm-up

Before jumping in the pool, spend a little time warming up your whole body. Stretch your arms and legs and limber up. Your whole body will get a work on while swimming in the pool; you want to warm up to avoid an injury.

Wear the right gear

For swimming you want to make sure you are wearing a bathing suit that is comfortable to move around in. You don’t want to worry about adjusting your suit while trying to exercise. Check with your swim class instructor to see what they suggest and permit you to wear during the class. Another item you may want to get is goggles. Goggles will keep your eyes protected from the water, which has many chemicals in it to keep it clean. Pool water in the eyes can burn, goggles can keep your eyes safe.  One last thing to help you make the most out of your exercise is swimming shoes. They can help you get a good grip on the bottom of the pool. Swimming shoes are a most if you are taking a swimming aerobic style class.

Get a friend involved

Having a friend join in your exercise program can encourage you to keep going when you feel like quitting. A friend can also help you feel comfortable while trying out a new exercise like swimming.

Try different exercises

Water aerobics can be a very intense workout, but isn’t right for everyone. Try different classes like jogging, arming toning and regular swim classes. A number of classes are offered with different levels of intensity. Check with instructors before signing up for a class to determine if the class is right for you.

Pace yourself

When starting any kind of exercise program, remember to pace yourself. You may not be able to finish the whole class when you first start. Don’t over exert yourself. Many swim instructors suggest swimmers to be active for about 15 minutes and take a short 5 minute break in between. This is a great way to pace yourself and keep your body engaged.

Side effects of swimming

Swimming as an exercise that can really improve your health, but there are a few side effects to swimming. The chemical chlorine, which is used to help keep pools clean, can dry out your skin. The chemicals in the pool can also cause issue for color treated hair. A bathing cap can protect your hair from the damaging chemicals.

Before getting involved with any exercise program, consult your doctor. You want to make sure you are healthy enough to start a new workout program.
