First Stop – The Florida Keys, Key West
Welcome to the first part of our travel series! We will be show casing the best travel destinations in America. We will take a look at some of the most amazing places across the country, from Hawaii to the east coast! Our first spot on this travel series, Key West, part of the Florida Keys.
Now I know Florida is known for being a retiring spot for baby boomers, but I’m not talking about just Florida, I am talking about the beautiful Florida Keys, one of the most unique places in the world. There are many things to see and do in the Florida Keys.
The Florida Keys are made up of 5 main islands; Key Largo, Isamorada, Marathon, Big Pine Key and Key West, with other smaller islands around those. All of these islands are amazing and breathe taking in their right, but the best would have to be Key West. In Key West you will find the southernmost part of the continental United States. Just 90 miles away from Cuba, Key West is a place full of rich history and perfect weather.
This is a place for people who enjoy water hobbies. Key West offers the best diving, fishing and every kind water sports in the world. There are many boat tours available that will take you to the most secluded areas of Key West through all the mangroves. The snorkeling in Key West offers the best coral reefs in the United States.
Key West is also known for the impressive sunsets. Deep shades of pink, orange, and red fill the sky as the sun sets into the ocean. Being on the southernmost part of the continental United States makes you feel like you are on the edge of the Earth, it feels like you are the first person to see the sunset. Many people plan there day around the sunset for the beautiful display of rich vibrant colors.
The night life in Key West is one of the most diverse in the country. The world famous Duval Street is home to some of the most popular bars in the world including The World’s Smallest Bar ( that’s the name of the bar, seriously) which holds about 6 people. Some of the other famous bars in Key West include Sloppy Joe’s, Hog’s Breath and The Green Parrot. Duval Street also has some of the best street performers as well. There are also many cute boutiques and restaurants along Duval Street.
In addition to the night life, Key West offers rich historical land marks that include the John Audubon House and Ernest Hemingway’s home. You can find many museums on the island filled with the rich pirate history of the island. You can check out the southernmost point of the continental United States while in Key West. It is marked with a marker that resembles a buoy. You can learn about the movement that happened 20 years ago when Key West seceded from the United States. Key West declared itself The Conch Republic. Of course the plan to become separate did not last for Key West and is now of course a part of the United States again.
The climate of Key West is very nice for most of the year and can get very hot in the summer months. Typically the best time of the year to visit the Florida Keys is late fall after hurricane season or late winter into early spring. The temperatures are in the mid 70s to the low 80s.
If you have a chance to travel, Key West is one of the places you have to check out. The weather is top notch, and there is something to do for everyone. If you just want to relax and get away from it all this is the place to be. If you’re looking to slow down and enjoy the simple things in life the Florida Keys are where it is at. You will find unique things you will never see anywhere else in the world.
