Top New Year’s Resolutions

After much searching on Google for the history of the New Year’s Resolution, I have come up empty handed. So instead I am giving you the top 10 New Year’s Resolutions according to the Huffington Post.

Top 10 New Year’s Resolutions

1. Lose Weight

Losing weight is the most popular New Year’s Resolution year in and year out. For seniors it is especially important to keep an eye on your weight and health. Remember to keep at your goal and work slowly. There is no quick fix. Make sure to consult your doctor before starting any diet or exercise program.

2. Stay in Touch

Research has found that people who have strong social ties live longer and healthier lives than people who don’t. With all the new technology today, it’s even easier to stay connected to friends and family than ever before. If you’re having a hard time getting friends and family together, plan to have a monthly get together to visit and catch up.

3. Quit Smoking

It is one of the hardest things to quit, and also the most important. Know that quitting can take more than one attempt. Look for different methods of help for quitting. The same method does not work for everyone. Your health should be your number one priority, but if that doesn’t get you, think of all the money you will save if you quit.

4. Save Money

There are small steps you can take to save money, especially for seniors! There are many store discounts available for seniors to save on their daily needs. If these few tips aren’t helping you the ways you have expected a Reverse Mortgage can give you the funds you need to make retirement a little more comfortable.

5. Cut Stress

Stress affects you in many negative ways that can take a serious toll on your body. Look for ways to de-stress yourself when you start to feel stressed out.

6. Travel

Vacations are a great way to get out of a rut and recharge your batteries. Include family or friends on your trip and enjoy an adventure together. Not sure you can afford that dream vacation? Check out a Reverse Mortgage Calculator, and see if it can help make your dream vacation a reality!

7. Volunteer

European Heart Journal has found that people with positive emotions and an upbeat attitude are 20 percent less likely than their gloomier peers to have a heart attack. Volunteering is a great way to feel good while doing something good.  Check out volunteermatch.org to find local volunteering opportunities.

8. Go Back to School

It is never too late to go back to school and start a new venture in your life. Discover a new passion or learn a new skill. If that isn’t a reason to go back to school then your health should be the reason. Many studies have suggested that people with a higher education are less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease.

9. Cut Back on Alcohol

Heavy drinking increases your risk of live and heart disease. It can increase the risk of depression, memory loss, and even seizures. Those risks increase the older you are.

10. Get More Sleep

Lack of sleep can put you at a greater risk for many health issues like obesity. Getting enough sleep can help improve your memory and your mood.

Best way to keep your Resolution: aim low. Set your goal and as you achieve your goal level strive to set your goal higher and try to reach it. If your Resolution is to lose weight keep realistic goals in mind. You aren’t going to lose 30 pounds in one month. Set a goal of 10 pounds which is more realistic. Want to save money? Aim for an amount every month and try to reach that goal.

I plan to lose a little weight, as soon as I finish all the left over holiday goodies.

What is your New Year’s Resolution for 2012?
