Summer time is meant for relaxing, having fun and enjoying the great outdoors with your family and friends. But remember, enjoying summer doesn’t mean it has to be an expensive vacation or trip – it’s just about the experiences you’ve made along the way. Here are a few fun tips to help you make the most of your summer.
Make Homemade Ice Cream – Everyone loves ice cream, and what better time to enjoy a frosty cold treat than on a hot summer day! Making your own ice cream is an easy and fun way to cool off this summer. You’ll need two metal cans (coffee can size, one larger than the other, both with lids), 1 cup of milk, 1 cup of sugar, 1 teaspoon of vanilla, ice and salt. You can also add 1 table spoon of chocolate syrup if you prefer chocolate ice cream
Mix the milk, sugar and vanilla together in the smaller can. Seal with the lid on tightly, and place inside the larger can. Put the ice and salt around the smaller can, making sure it remains in the center. Put the lid on the large can and roll it around, toss it, play catch, just keep agitating the can for about 30 minutes. In no time at all you’ll have delicious ice cream you can enjoy!
Capture Your Community – Take a walk around your neighborhood with your kids, or friends, and take pictures of the things you see. Really stop to look at all the things you might not ordinarily notice, take in the small things and capture them on camera. Get the pictures printed and share them in a photo album. This is a very fun activity to do with kids because it gives you a chance to see the world through their eyes.
Go see an outdoor concert– enjoy the nice weather by attending a local outdoor concert! Contact your community center to ask about upcoming events. Bonus – outdoor concerts and activities are often free for members of the community.
Camp out in a National Park – The National Park Service hosts several “Free Entrance Days” in your National Park. These days give you the opportunity to enjoy a fun getaway with no cost! Find out more information by visiting http://www.nps.gov/findapark/feefreeparks.htm
Take a Bite Out of Local Fairs and Festivals – The best part of summer, hands down, is the huge amount of fairs and festivals going on! State and county fairs usually have the 4-H events like tractor pulls, riding competitions, animals and petting farms while festivals seem to be more ride-oriented. But the best thing they both have in common is the food! Summer time is the best time to enjoy elephant ears, cotton candy, and every kind of fried food you can imagine!
Go Geocaching – Geocaching is a game played by people around the world using their GPS to hide and seek treasure! A geocacher gets a little treasure or trinket and places it in a safe box in a location that’s hidden but not too difficult to find. The person then uses the GPS to pinpoint the treasure’s location and posts those coordinates with the geocaching community online. Often times, with the treasure is a log book for you to mark down what you found and when you found it. You can take the treasure and mark your findings but always remember to leave something in return for the next treasure hunter!
